The undergrounds of Rome: spelean archaeology
Duration: 3 days.
Structure: 1 theory lecture (3 hours) plus 2 full days.
Language of Teaching: Italian, English, Spanish.
Course Description: The module will focus on the reasons why Rome is so full of underground constructions and will also give a brief outline of the different types of hypogeum and their main characteristic. The course will be structured in a theory lectures of 3 hours and two full day visits to archaeological sites open to the public. Students will be informed on which sites they will visit during the theoretical lectures, as they can change due to the bureaucratic difficulties to access most archaeological sites in Rome.
Output: Certificate of attendance.
Cost of the course: 200,00 € (minimum 6 participants).
Date of start: Weekly from the 1st of July.
Objectives: To describe the hypogeum archaeological heritage of Rome, with a particular focus on exploration as a modern instrument of research, paired with classic archaeology.
Programme: Apart from theoretical lectures, practical lectures and field trips will be as follows:
- - Villa Adriana undergrounds (full day)
- - Effluent of the lake of Nemi
- - ‘Ad Decimum’ catacomb
Equiment (only for the course):
- Crash Helmet
- Torch
- Speleology suit *
- Boots (when necessary)*
The cost will include equipment and entrance to the sites.
