Duration: 10 days.

Structure: Total of 60 hours divided in 6 daily hours. Maximum 25 students.

Teacher: Craig Peritz.

Language: Italian (it is possible to have an interpreter for the classes in English).

Description: The workshop aims to provide a direct experience of the actor’s work within Shakespeare’s theatre, focussing particularly on the material offered to us in Hamlet. It is an exploration of the analytical instruments and character construction elements this texts provides us with. Prof. Peritz’s workshop will be proceeded each morning with a physical warm-up of one and a half hours conducted by Prof. Luca Ventura.

Output: Certificate of attendance, ECTS.

Cost: 500,00 €. The cost is refered only to the workshop lectures. The student will charge: training aid, room and board.

Starting date: From Monday 20th July to Friday 31st July.

Objectives: The work allows the actors maximum access to their imagination and creativity, whilst providing a solid basis of analysis aimed at sustaining the dramatic action on stage.

Programme: In its essence, the course approaches Shakespeare not from a psychological perspective, but through the textual structure inherent in the very text of Hamlet, beginning from the study of dramatic writing and going on to discover the rules upon which the text is founded, thus developing the ability to handle the structure of the dramatic action. This enables the actor to build his/her own characters based on the his/her own relationship with the concepts enclosed within the text and accessing the individual’s own creative processes.

Methodology: workshop.

Structure: Total of 36 hours divided in 6 daily hours. Maximum 25 students.

Teacher: Alfredo Colombaioni.

Language: Italian (it is possible to have an interpreter for the classes in English).

Description: The course will be of a practical nature and is designed to recognize the level of muscular elasticity and the individual difficulties. Some of the practical exercises will include: patè, flic-flac, falls, comic entrances, cartwheels, all aimed at using acrobatics within the spectrum of comedy gags.

Output: Certificate of attendance, ECTS.

Cost: 450,00 €. The cost is referred only to the workshop lectures. The student will charge: training aid, room and board.

Starting date: From Monday 13th July to Saturday 18th July.

Objectives: The main objective of the course is to explore the individual’s physical potential through the concepts of “centering” and “balance”. This will lead to the construction of a different physicality, where the body is deconstructed and reconstructed. The students will rediscover their own body and be able to use it as an essential element of the characters they build on stage. This journey will lead to the rediscovery of the individual physical abilities and will enable the students to control their body in a new and experimental way.

Programme: Going from Kabuky’s theatre, to open air theatre, to circus art and to Dario Fo, the course will take you on an uninterrupted journey where acrobatics becomes a fundamental discipline.

Methodology: Workshop. It is recommended that students wear comfortable clothing for the physical exercises.

Duration: 1 week.

Structure: Total of 36 hours divided in 6 daily hours. Maximum 25 students.

Teacher: Giancarlo Fares.

Language: Italian (it is possible to have an interpreter for the classes in English).

Description: The course will focus on a methodological approach guiding the students on journey through a nineteenth century dramatic text. There will be a theoretical introduction on Stanislavskij’s theories and its recent developments.

Output: Certificate of attendance, ECTS.

Cost: 450,00 €. The cost is referred only to the workshop lectures. The student will charge: training aid, room and board.

Starting date: From Monday 13th July to Saturday 18th July.

Objective: Through textual analysis we will seek to understand the basic dynamics of Stanislavskij’s method. The practical analysis of some scenes will allow the students to identify the internal and external actions of the characters. Programme:
We will proceed with the division of the scenes in “fragments” in order to fully understand the dramatic structure and the key moments from a psychological point of view. Within the individual fragments we will seek to understand the dynamics of conflict between characters. At the end of this journey the student-actors will work on the “etjude” of the scenes. The etjude is a conscious journey within the scene, allowing the construction of the scene through the actions portrayed. In this phase, the teacher will be able to assist not only with the construction of the characters, but also with the very work the actor performs on him/herself. Each day will begin with a group warm-up aimed at improving relaxation and concentration, followed by some exercises to awaken the imagination and personal creativity.

Methodology: workshop.

Duration: 1 week.

Structure: Total of 36 hours divided in 6 daily hours. Maximum 25 students.

Teacher: Marzia Dal Fabbro.

Language: English.

Description: William Shakespeare is possibly the most well-know English playwright. His plays have been translated in many languages and audiences belonging to all cultures and countries have been able to enjoy the multitude of stories and characters portrayed through them. And yet, no matter how good the translation, there is only one language which allows actors to fully explore Shakespeare’s poetry and genius: Elizabethan English. It is the rhythm and musicality inherent in Shakespeare’s text that contribute so significantly to the understanding of the characters and situations exposed in the plays. Through the pentameter’s beat pulsing in every line of verse, through the numerous images and the sounds within the very words, Shakespeare’s texts become a living and ever-changing canvas for the actor to explore and experiment the infinite possibilities of the characters and his own art.

Output: Certificate of attendance, ECTS.

Cost: 450,00 €. The cost is referred only to the workshop lectures. The student will charge: training aid, room and board.

Starting date: From Monday 6th July to Saturday 11th July.

Objective: The workshop is aimed at working on scenes form the plays in their original language, whether the participants are English mother-tongue or foreigners. Through the sounds and rhythms, we will observe how form can become content, how thoughts, moods and emotions can be brought to life. In this journey, the participants will be encouraged to develop and refine their vocal and physical skills. The first two hours of each morning, will be dedicated to an extensive vocal warm-up which will serve not only to approach the texts, but also to develop the individual’s imagination and create a world where Shakespeare’s characters can exist. During the warm-up, diction issues such as diphthongs and triphthongs, difficult consonant sounds such as “th” and “thr”, will be addressed with specific exercises.

Programme: The texts will be analysed and worked on exclusively in English, but participants may use a translation in their own language for reference. A number of scenes will be analysed and worked through, allowing the participants to prepare for their final “workshop” performance and building a small repertoire of Shakespearian dialogues and monologues. The final aim is to be able to absorb Shakespeare’s language to the extent in which the meter and form are no longer “scary” obstacles, but the means through which each character can express their own feelings, thoughts and truthfulness.

Linguistic proficiency: The workshop is open to anyone wishing to approach the study of Shakespeare’s work in its original language. You will need an average understanding of the English language in written form and a basic level of spoken English. You will not be requested to write in English, but the explanation of the exercises will be mainly in English (Italian explanations will also be available at the participants’ request).

Equipment and kit: Candidates will need to bring the copies of the texts in English (a list of plays will be sent prior to commencement of the course) and in their native language, should they need them. There will be further handouts provided during the course. It is recommended to wear comfortable clothes for the morning warm-up and ladies are advised to bring a long black practice skirt.

Methodology: workshop.

Duration: 1 week.

Structure: 48 hours in total divided in 8 daily hours. Maximum 25 students.

Teacher: Gigi Ottoni.

Language: Italian (it is possible to have an interpreter for the classes in English).

Output: certificate of attendance, ECTS.

Cost: 450,00 €. The cost is referred only to the workshop lectures. The student will charge: training aid, room and board.

Starting Date: From Monday 6th July to Saturday 11th July.

Objectives: The course is based on the Italian “commedia dell’arte” and the use of the mask. There will be a brief amount of work based on Improvisation techniques as used in the similar form of “farsa giullaresca”(a farce based on the commedia characters). There will be research on the history of comedy and an analysis of the different elements which have characterised the different forms of comic theatre. We will discover a theatre founded on the principle of provocation, which becomes self-inventive, thus creating “An industry of entertainment” exploiting the maximum potential of the playful nature of the stage. This means that the dramatic text as used by actors throughout the 16th century is rejected and transformed in a machine able to produce endless shows without the need of a formal playtext. Commedia dell’Arte encapsulated within itself the fascinating secret of having made comedy actors transcend their own time and therefore being able to survive successfully all the way through to our modern age.

Programme: The first part will focus on the birth of the Commedia:

Structure of the blank canvas ;

Construction of the principle characters of the Commedia dell’Arte;

Mask archetypes;

Functions, content and acting devices of the “Mask”;

The mask as the interpreter of a universal language with reference to the characters it represents.

The second part will lead towards identifying :

The basic moves of the “masked character”. ( eg: head, arms, legs, specific gait, attitudes, etc);

The structure of a hypothetical stage as developed from the concept of the “Comedians’ cart”;

Set and technical innovations which were to contribute significantly to the development of proper stage machinery and set.

In the following stages we will experiment with the fundamental principles of the Mask’s movement, not by merely wearing the mask, but transferring the body’s attitudes in all the diverse situations the Mask will have to live in. Physical research will aim at reaching a harmony and coordination touching on basic concepts of acrobatics and juggling. In the final stage, we will analyse the shift towards the “Commedia Nuova”, as developed by the Italian playwright Carlo Goldoni. At the very end of this intensive workshop, there will be a performance which will not be a proper show, but a demonstration of our consciousness of a world so far from our current one and yet so very near.

It is recommended to wear comfortable clothes for the warm-up and physical exercises.
